A Windmill at Zaandam
1871
Monet painted this charming Dutch scene during a brief but prolific stay in the Netherlands in 1871, fleeing the Franco-Prussian War. He was absolutely captivated by the flat landscapes, quirky windmills, and the way the light danced on the water around Zaandam. You can see his signature Impressionist style emerging here, with loose, energetic brushstrokes capturing the breezy atmosphere rather than perfect details. He actually wrote to a friend that he found the windmills 'amusing' and painted several of them during this short trip!
