Waterloo Bridge in London
1902
Monet was absolutely obsessed with London fog, and this hazy purple dreamscape proves it. Painted during one of his many trips to the Savoy Hotel, he set up his easel to capture the Thames disappearing into the industrial smog. The Waterloo Bridge barely holds its shape, dissolving into the water below, while a tiny boat drifts through the mist. He actually painted over 40 versions of this specific bridge, trying to catch the light at different times of day—talk about dedication to the perfect gloom!
