Hot Cockles ('La Main Chaude')
c. 1660
Step right into this bustling 17th-century Dutch tavern scene where a rowdy game of 'Hot Cockles' is in full swing! In the foreground, a man bends over with his eyes covered while a woman holds his hand, waiting for him to guess which of the laughing onlookers just gave him a slap. It's a classic genre scene by Cornelis de Man, capturing the chaotic fun of everyday life with incredible detail—from the pipe smokers in the back to the elegant couple in dark blue observing the madness. This painting is a perfect example of Dutch Golden Age humor, showing that people have been playing silly party games for centuries.
