Greeting at the door
David Bles captures a charming, candid moment in this lively sketch, likely depicting a romantic departure or a warm welcome. A gentleman is seen attentively assisting a lady in a voluminous dress, perhaps helping her step up to mount the saddled horse waiting patiently beside them. The loose, energetic lines and the focus on everyday emotion are classic hallmarks of Romantic genre scenes, which often celebrated ordinary life. It feels like a frozen snapshot of a 19th-century story, leaving us wondering where this couple is headed or if they've just returned from an adventure.
