Lincoln Cathedral from Brayford Pool
circa 1808
David Cox captures a misty morning in Lincoln with this atmospheric watercolor, painted when he was just a young man of about twenty-five. The massive Lincoln Cathedral looms in the background like a ghostly giant, its spires fading into the pale sky, while a dark-sailed boat rests quietly on the Brayford Pool. You can almost feel the damp air as small figures gather on the riverbank in the foreground. Though painted decades before the official Impressionist movement, Cox's loose handling of light and weather makes him a true forerunner to those later masters, proving that capturing a 'feeling' was important long before Monet picked up a brush.
