Ruins of Karnack [Karnak]. by David Roberts, 1846-1849

Scottish artist David Roberts brought the magic of ancient Egypt to Victorian audiences with this sweeping view of the Karnak temple complex. Standing on a high stone platform, a group of travelers—some in traditional Middle Eastern dress, others in European attire—gaze out at the majestic ruins, including towering obelisks and grand colonnades stretching toward the horizon. Painted during his extensive travels in the 1840s, Roberts' romanticized landscapes captured the grandeur of a lost civilization, making him the 'father of travel painting' and inspiring a massive Egyptomania craze back in Europe.
