Kitchen Scene
1618-20
Before he became the ultimate court painter for the Spanish King, a young Diego Velázquez was busy mastering the gritty, everyday reality of Seville's kitchens. Painted around 1618, this moody Baroque masterpiece features a young servant surrounded by humble earthenware jugs, bowls, and a mortar and pestle. Velázquez uses dramatic lighting to make these ordinary kitchen tools pop against the dark background, a technique he picked up from the Italian master Caravaggio. It's a fascinating glimpse into the artist's early phase, where he elevated the mundane lives of common people into high art long before he started painting royalty.
