Saint John the Baptist in the Wilderness
ca. 1622
Velázquez painted this youthful Saint John the Baptist early in his career in Seville, around 1622, long before he became the famous court painter in Madrid. Instead of a wild, rugged prophet, we see a soft-skinned young man draped in elegant pink fabric, sitting casually under a dark, twisting tree. He holds a simple reed staff and gestures as if mid-sermon, while a lamb grazes peacefully nearby—a classic symbol of Christ, the 'Lamb of God.' The dramatic lighting and realistic texture show the young artist was already deeply influenced by Caravaggio's style, making the holy figure feel surprisingly human and accessible.
