Madonna and Child
c. 1465
Dieric Bouts captures a quiet, intimate moment between Mary and baby Jesus, stripping away the usual golden halos to focus on raw human emotion. Mary, draped in a rich, deep blue robe with delicate gold trim, gazes down tenderly at the chubby, naked child in her arms. Notice the incredible network of cracks across the surface—that's craquelure, a natural aging process that proves this painting is over 500 years old! Bouts was a master of the Early Netherlandish Renaissance, and he likely painted the Virgin's robe using ultramarine, a pigment so expensive it was worth more than gold at the time.
