Altarpiece of Santa Lucia dei Magnoli
1445-Around 1447
Step into a pastel-colored Renaissance stage set where the Virgin Mary and baby Jesus hold court under elegant pink arches. To their left, a rugged John the Baptist in animal skins points toward the holy pair, while St. Francis looks on in quiet contemplation. On the right, things get a bit gruesome: St. Lucy casually holds a plate with her own eyeballs on it, a nod to her martyrdom and patronage of the blind. Domenico Veneziano’s masterful use of light and perspective makes this Florentine altarpiece feel less like a stiff religious icon and more like a vibrant, sunlit room you could actually walk into.
