Flat Iron Holder by Donald Harding, c. 1940

Far from being a medieval weapon, this skeletal metal frame is actually a humble flat iron holder, designed to keep a scorching hot clothes iron from burning the table. Donald Harding sketched this utilitarian object around 1940, likely as part of a project to document American folk art and everyday tools before they vanished. The wavy, rusted bars look almost like a strange creature, but they served a very practical purpose in homes before electric irons existed. It is a beautiful reminder of how even the most ordinary household items were once crafted with sturdy, lasting iron.
