Notre-Dame de Paris by Donald Shaw MacLaughlan, 1900

Canadian artist Donald Shaw MacLaughlan skipped the famous front entrance of Notre-Dame in 1900 to capture this moody side profile of the Parisian giant. You can see the massive rose window staring out like a stone eye, surrounded by the flying buttresses that hold the whole thing up. The scratchy, energetic lines give the ancient cathedral a sense of movement, while the dark, leafy trees in the foreground add a touch of nature to the heavy stone architecture. It’s a beautiful, quiet moment frozen in ink just before the modern era changed the city forever.
