Landscape Album, 11 Leaves, P06
Dong Qichang, the Ming dynasty master who basically wrote the rulebook for Chinese literati painting, creates a dreamy landscape here using nothing but ink and water. Notice how the misty void in the middle splits the composition, pushing the towering, pine-dotted mountains into the distance while keeping the foreground intimate. He wasn't trying to paint a specific place, but rather the idea of a mountain retreat, using soft washes and sharp brushstrokes to show off his calligraphy skills. That red seal in the corner is his artist's chop, a traditional signature stamp claiming this misty dream as his own.
