Landscape Album, 11 Leaves, P07
Dong Qichang, the Ming Dynasty master who basically wrote the rulebook for Chinese literati painting, created this serene ink sketch. It’s part of an album, featuring his signature 'dry brush' style that looks almost like a charcoal sketch, prioritizing mood over realistic detail. The calligraphy at the top sets a peaceful scene: cooking smoke rising into the mist, a hidden pine pavilion, and a quiet figure reading a Buddhist sutra (the Vimalakirti Sutra). This loose, spontaneous style is a perfect example of the 'Southern School' philosophy he championed—art for the soul and self-expression, rather than just copying reality.
