Landscape Album (Palace Museum, Beijing) Colophon by Wang Shimin 1
Vertical columns of fluid, semi-cursive calligraphy flow across this aged page, written by the Qing Dynasty master Wang Shimin as a colophon for a landscape album. In the text, he praises the bold, misty style of his mentor Dong Qichang (referred to by his posthumous name Wenmin) and shares a story of artistic generosity. Wang Shimin explains that after collecting the album for twenty years, he gifted it to his friend Wang Hui (Shigu) because Wang Hui's deep appreciation reminded him of the legendary friendship of 'High Mountain and Flowing Water.' It captures a touching moment of mutual admiration and the passing of artistic legacy among China's literati masters.
