Landscape Album (Nine-leaf version) P5 by Dong Qichang

Dong Qichang, the ultimate art influencer of the late Ming dynasty, created this album leaf as a masterclass in literati style. The right side features a sparse landscape with skeletal trees and distant mountains, drawn with a dry, scratchy brush that prioritizes mood and structure over realism. The calligraphy on the left is essentially a 17th-century art critique, where Dong compares the techniques of earlier masters Ni Zan and Zhao Mengfu. He notes how Ni Zan borrowed from Zhao but changed the composition, proving that true artistic learning means innovation, not just copying.
