Still Life with Flowers
1920
Dorothea Maetzel-Johannsen throws traditional still life rules out the window in this vibrant 1920 composition. Instead of perfectly arranged fruit and flowers, we get a chaotic, energetic burst of red blooms, yellow daisies, and green pears tumbling out of boldly patterned vases. As a key figure in German Expressionism, she uses thick, aggressive brushstrokes and clashing colors to capture the emotional intensity of the objects rather than their physical reality. The way the books seem to barely support the heavy bowl adds a delightful sense of precarious balance to the whole scene.
