The Crucifixion
1450
This dramatic 15th-century Gothic scene packs an incredible amount of action into one frame. At the center, Christ hangs on the cross, flanked by the two thieves, while a chaotic crowd of soldiers, mourners, and onlookers swirls around the base. Look closely at the right side, where a monstrous devil presides over the Harrowing of Hell, pulling souls from a fiery pit—a stark contrast to the serene castle in the background on the left. Painted around 1450 by the mysterious Dreux Budé Master, this piece is a perfect example of how Gothic artists loved to tell multiple biblical stories simultaneously in a single, bustling composition.
