Retablo-Child’s Saint by E. Boyd, 1935-1942

Seated regally on a simple chair beneath dark blue drapes, the Santo Niño de Atocha is depicted here in his classic pilgrim attire, complete with a feathered hat and red cape. This beloved child saint, a popular figure in New Mexican and Mexican Catholic devotion, holds a staff topped with a gourd and a small basket—legend says this basket miraculously refills with food and water for the needy. Created by folk art enthusiast E. Boyd between 1935 and 1942, the piece captures the vibrant, naive style of traditional retablos, serving as a colorful historical record of regional faith.
