Still Life by Earl Horter, 1939

Earl Horter’s 1939 composition shatters a traditional tabletop scene into a dazzling puzzle of geometric shapes and bold patterns. A bowl of fruit and a blue-and-white pitcher are fractured across the canvas, wrapped in striking red motifs that look like they belong on a modernist rug. Rather than capturing reality as the eye sees it, Horter plays with Cubist ideas, flattening the space and overlapping planes to create a rhythmic, almost musical arrangement. Signed in the corner, this piece shows how American modernists were remixing European avant-garde styles into something distinctly their own.
