1877
While Edgar Degas is famous for capturing the energy of ballet dancers, this quiet 1877 sketch shows his keen eye for everyday domestic life. You can see a spiky potted plant sitting on a round table, juxtaposed against the rigid, sketchy lines of a window frame with a fringed valance. The loose, searching strokes and the number '27' in the corner suggest this was a quick study, perhaps a page from a sketchbook capturing the composition of a room. Interestingly, though this falls under Impressionism, Degas actually disliked the label and preferred to call himself a Realist!
