Untitled (Wagon Train)
1903
Edgar Samuel Paxson brings the dusty reality of the American frontier to life in this 1903 scene of a wagon train trekking west. Rather than a glamorous adventure, we see the slow, plodding grind of oxen pulling heavy covered wagons, with families huddled inside and riders scanning the horizon. Paxson, a self-taught artist who actually lived in Montana during the late 19th century, was famous for his historically accurate depictions of Western life. The loose washes of color perfectly capture the hazy heat of the desert, making you almost feel the dry air and hear the creaking wheels.
