Auber (d’après Bocourt)
1877
French composer Daniel Auber takes center stage in this intricate 1877 engraving by Edmond Morin, surrounded by a swirling dreamscape of his operatic hits. At the bottom, a violin rests casually on an open score for 'La Muette de Portici,' a work so powerful that its 1830 performance in Brussels actually helped spark the Belgian Revolution. The floating figures above him seem to act out the drama of his legacy, while a bust and obelisk on the left suggest his monumental status in music history.
