On the Scent
Edmund Henry Osthaus was basically the 19th-century equivalent of a dog influencer, dedicating his life to painting our four-legged friends with incredible realism. In this autumnal scene, three bird dogs are caught mid-hunt, their bodies tense and noses locked on a scent near a weathered split-rail fence. As a founder of the Cleveland School of Art, Osthaus mastered 'sporting painting,' capturing the intense focus of hunting dogs so well that you can almost feel the crisp fall air and the excitement of the chase.
