The Guitarist

Édouard Manet

1861

The Guitarist by Édouard Manet, 1861

Manet was totally swept up in the 'Spanish craze' hitting Paris in the 1860s, and this sketchy, energetic print is a perfect example. We see a ragged musician, hat tilted back, belting out a tune while strumming his guitar, with a bottle of wine and some garlic waiting on the floor for his break. The rough, cross-hatched lines make the whole scene vibrate with movement, almost as if you can hear the music coming off the page.
