The Avenue by Édouard Vuillard, 1899

Step into a lazy afternoon in 1899 Paris with Vuillard! He’s usually the king of cozy, cluttered rooms, but here he’s capturing the wide-open avenue. Notice those long, green shadows stretching out like carpets? They give the scene a dreamy, flattened look typical of the Nabis movement (a group of Post-Impressionists), where decorative patterns mattered more than perfect perspective. The lady in the big blue skirt seems to be people-watching, just like us, amidst the sketchy, ghostly crowds.
