The Lilacs (The Schematic Bouquet) by Édouard Vuillard, circa 1890

Édouard Vuillard, a founding member of the Nabi group, strips this bouquet of lilacs down to its most essential, decorative shapes. Instead of delicate petals, we see bold, heavy blocks of purple and pink crashing against a warm, mustard-orange background. The leaves are simplified into flat, green geometric forms, making the whole arrangement look almost like a cut-out paper collage or a fabric pattern. It's a perfect example of how these artists wanted to move away from strict realism and focus on the emotional punch of pure color.
