Bathing Boys
Edvard Munch, best known for his screaming existential dread, actually had a softer side, as seen in this dreamy scene of boys at the water's edge. A lone figure stands poised on a diving plank, his back turned to us, while his friends float and swim in the swirling, hypnotic blues and greens of the water. The loose, almost ghostly brushstrokes capture the fleeting, hazy feeling of a summer day rather than a strict photographic reality. It's a rare glimpse of youthful innocence from the artist who usually preferred to paint our deepest anxieties.
