Madonna
1894
Edvard Munch completely flipped the traditional religious Madonna on its head with this haunting 1894 masterpiece. Instead of a serene, holy mother, we see a pale, sensual woman with flowing dark hair that seems to swallow her whole, framed by a bizarre, wavy border filled with swimming sperm-like shapes. In the bottom left corner, a tiny, ghostly fetus curls up, adding a deeply unsettling twist to the theme of creation and motherhood. Munch was obsessed with the dual nature of women as both life-givers and destroyers, making this one of the most provocative and psychologically intense images of the Symbolist movement.
