Meeting on the Beach by Edvard Munch, 1933-35

In this late-career masterpiece, Edvard Munch captures a tense, silent standoff between three women and two men on a salmon-pink beach. The women, dressed in striking green, white, and red gowns, stand apart from the dark-clad men, separated by an invisible social divide and a dark wooden railing. Behind them, a luminous yellow column of light pierces the deep blue sea, adding a dreamlike, almost eerie glow to the scene. Painted just before his death, it echoes his lifelong fascination with the complex, often fraught relationships between men and women.
