Saury, or Skipper Pike, Esox saurus by Edward Donovan, 1803

Edward Donovan’s 1803 illustration of the Saury, or Skipper Pike, is a stunning example of early scientific documentation that doubles as fine art. Notice the incredible precision in the tiny scales and the beautiful gradient of color, shifting from a deep oceanic blue along the spine to a shimmering silver belly. The fish’s needle-like snout dominates the composition, giving it an almost prehistoric, spear-like appearance against the stark, aged paper background. Interestingly, the scientific name listed, Esox saurus, is actually a synonym for the pickerel, showing how fish taxonomy was a bit of a 'wild west' in 1803 compared to today's strict classifications.
