Cape Cod Evening
1939
Edward Hopper captures a masterclass in awkward silence in this classic example of American Realism. A woman stands rigidly on the lawn with her arms crossed, while a man slumps on the porch steps, both seemingly ignoring each other in the fading light. Even the collie dog in the foreground looks like it's trying to figure out the heavy tension between them. The dark, brooding pine trees in the background amplify the feeling of isolation and quiet drama that Hopper is so famous for.
