Powder Horn
c. 1938
Before modern canteens, soldiers carried their gunpowder in hollowed-out cow horns, and this specific example is a masterpiece of folk art. Artist Edward L. Loper meticulously documented this piece around 1938, likely for a historical archive, capturing the intricate star patterns and geometric bands carved into the surface. The wide end features a beautiful wooden cap with a sunburst design, while the top right corner displays a mysterious row of symbols including a trumpet and crescent moon. These horns were vital survival tools, often personalized by soldiers with carvings of maps or patriotic motifs, turning a simple container into a canvas of history.
