Stilleven

Edward Ladell

Stilleven by Edward Ladell

Edward Ladell, a 19th-century academic painter, was absolutely obsessed with 17th-century Dutch masters, painting so much like them that his work was often mistaken for the real deal! In this delicious scene, he shows off his skills with a glowing glass of wine reflecting a window, a massive cluster of dusty purple grapes, and a lemon peeled in a perfect, continuous spiral—a tricky detail artists loved to include just to prove how talented they were. It's a beautiful nod to the 'Pronkstilleven' (ostentatious still life) tradition, celebrating abundance and the simple pleasure of a good snack.
