Hochbrücke im Gebirge
Ca. 1880-90
Edward Theodore Compton captures the rugged drama of the Alps in this atmospheric sketch, likely painted during one of his many mountain expeditions in the late 19th century. A sturdy covered bridge, labeled 'Hochbrücke' (High Bridge), spans a rushing gorge, framed by dark, jagged pines and a looming, snow-dusted peak. Compton was famous for hiking to remote spots to paint en plein air, and the loose, expressive washes here suggest a quick field study meant to capture the raw, moody light of the mountains before it shifted.
