Edwin Forbes was a sketch artist who followed the Union Army during the Civil War, capturing the gritty reality of soldier life rather than just the battles. Here, he depicts a rugged 'Yankee volunteer' in profile, his beard unkempt and rifle slung heavily over his shoulder with a canteen dangling down. The loose, energetic strokes give the drawing a sense of immediacy, as if Forbes sketched this weary soldier right on the banks of the Rappahannock River in August 1863.
