1876
Imagine marching for miles with a heavy rifle on your shoulder, only to see a hill covered in tents stretching to the horizon—that's the scene Edwin Forbes captures here. This 1876 work depicts Union soldiers 'Going into camp at night' after a long day during the Civil War. While the officers on horseback look relatively fresh, the guys in the foreground are already huddled by a tiny fire, probably dreaming of a hot meal. Forbes was a special artist for a newspaper, sketching real life on the front lines to show folks back home the gritty, unglamorous reality of army life.
