Sitting Woman by Egon Schiele, 1910

Egon Schiele's raw, unflinching gaze captures a seated woman with wild, messy hair and wide, haunted eyes that seem to stare right through the canvas. Painted in 1910 during the height of his Expressionist period, the figure's elongated, bony hands are clasped tightly in her lap, betraying a nervous, psychological tension that Schiele was famous for. The jagged, sketchy lines of her reddish-brown bodice and the rough blue outline of the chair make her look almost like she's vibrating with anxiety. It's a brilliant example of how Schiele stripped away polite society's pretenses to reveal the raw, sometimes uncomfortable human psyche underneath.
