Binzasara, ein Tanz mit Klappern
early 1790s
Imagine a 1790s girl group performing a synchronized dance routine—that's essentially what Eishōsai Chōki captured here. Five figures, likely high-ranking courtesans from Edo's pleasure quarters, wear identical green leaf-patterned kimonos and oversized, flower-adorned hats. They hold binzasara, a percussion instrument made of wooden slats, clicking them together in rhythm. The calligraphy at the top identifies the stars of the show, Yoshizo and Mitsue, making this the Edo-period equivalent of a concert poster.
