For the Voice Pl.23
1923
El Lissitzky turned a page of poetry into a visual puzzle in this 1923 design for the book *For the Voice*. The giant black Cyrillic letter 'Б' (B) dominates the center because it's the secret key to the poem below: the words 'Grib,' 'Grab,' 'Grob,' and 'Grub' all end with that sound. Surrounding the letter are red vowels and punctuation marks that dance around like musical notes, capturing the rhythm of Vladimir Mayakovsky's verses. This is a brilliant example of Constructivist graphic design, where the book was built to be a tool for a performer, with bold graphical elements helping a speaker navigate the text.
