Comische kluizenaars Pl.07
1909
Step into a whimsical 1909 farmyard where the birds are up to no good! A tall, goofy-looking brown bird stands in the foreground holding a balloon string in its beak, seemingly waiting for two fluffy chicks to finish playing on their makeshift seesaw. In the background, a peacock with an impressively long tail shows off from atop a white wall, while chickens gossip near a wooden gate. This charming illustration by Elisabeth Schellbach comes from 'Komische Käuze' (roughly translating to 'Funny Oddballs' or 'Eccentric Birds'), capturing the playful, storybook magic of early 20th-century German illustration with its soft colors and expressive characters.
