Figure buffe Pl.15
1909
This whimsical 1909 illustration by Elisabeth Schellbach brings a fairy tale forest to life with a touch of Art Nouveau flair. A regal grey snake, sporting a golden crown, coils majestically atop a giant red-and-white spotted mushroom, guarding a hidden treasure of gold coins and pearls beneath. Below, a curious black-and-yellow fire salamander gazes up at the serpent king, as if plotting its next move in this charming, storybook scene. Schellbach was known for her delightful children's book illustrations, and this plate perfectly captures the playful, slightly mysterious world of woodland creatures.
