Fragaria Heritage
1908
Meet the 'Heritage' strawberry, immortalized in 1908 by artist Ellen Isham Schutt. This isn't just a pretty picture; it's a serious scientific record created for the USDA to document fruit varieties before color photography was reliable. Notice the cross-section at the bottom? It reveals the juicy interior and seed placement, crucial info for farmers of the time. The handwritten notes at the bottom tell us this specific berry came from a grower in Burlington, New Jersey, making this a delicious slice of American agricultural history.
