ヴィティス - キー
1909
You might mistake this for a photograph, but Elsie E. Lower hand-painted this luscious cluster of 'Key' grapes in 1909. The notes in the corner tell a story of agriculture: this specific variety was grown by Geo. K. Husmann in Napa County, California. Lower was part of a team of artists working for the U.S. Department of Agriculture to document fruit varieties before color photography was up to the task. Her skillful use of light and shadow makes the grapes look plump and ready to pop.
