Blumenanbeterin
1905
In this striking 1905 illustration titled Blumenanbeterin (Flower Worshipper), Emil Rudolf Weiss captures the essence of German Art Nouveau, or Jugendstil. A nude woman with cascading, wavy hair kneels in a stylized meadow, holding a large, drooping blossom high above her head as if offering it to the heavens. The bold, black lines and decorative geometric border are classic hallmarks of the movement, which sought to blur the lines between fine art and graphic design. Weiss was a master of this aesthetic, often using such elegant, flowing forms to bring a sense of organic harmony to his work.
