Suggestions for Fabrics and Rugs Pl.06
1923
Imagine a 1920s Pinterest board for fabric designers—that’s exactly what Emile-Allain Séguy created here. Titled *Suggestions pour étoffes et tapis* (Suggestions for Fabrics and Carpets), this 1923 plate offers three distinct 'moods': a chaotic, radiating pattern of purple and red leaves at the top, a serene green and blue botanical study on the bottom left, and bold, stylized red roses on the right. While rooted in the natural forms of Art Nouveau, the flat, graphic intensity here actually screams Art Deco. Séguy used hand-colored stencils (pochoir) to achieve these super-saturated colors, helping define the vibrant look of the Jazz Age.
