A Paixão

A Paixão by Emile Bernard, 1895

Emile Bernard takes us straight back to the Middle Ages with this 1895 illustration of the Crucifixion, but with a distinct Post-Impressionist twist. Notice the bold black outlines and flat blocks of color—this is 'Cloisonnism,' a style Bernard helped invent alongside his friend Paul Gauguin. It looks like a stained glass window come to life, complete with labeled figures like 'marie' and 'jean' acting as a visual guide for the viewer. Bernard was obsessed with reviving the spiritual simplicity of medieval art, rejecting the strict realism of his time for something much more symbolic and raw.
