Banjo Clock
1935-1942
Before a clock ticks, someone has to draw its soul, and this 1930s design sheet by Emilio Zito does exactly that for a patriotic 'Banjo Clock.' Created for the Oneida Historical Society in Utica, New York, the blueprint splits into two distinct visions: a circular face featuring a scenic medallion for 'Chapin Little Falls,' and a rectangular base showcasing a classical woman offering a cup to an eagle. Notice the handwritten note about the '16 stars' on her shield? That’s a clever historical nod to the early United States, turning a simple timepiece into a mini history lesson. It’s a wonderful example of how designers in the Works Progress Administration era documented American heritage.
