Defesas costeiras
1940
Eric Ravilious captures the tense, quiet anticipation of Britain's coastline during World War II in this striking scene. Soldiers stand guard atop a grassy fortification, complete with a searchlight, a cannon, and the White Ensign flag fluttering in the breeze. Below them, coils of barbed wire snake up the hillside, guarding a dark, bunker-like structure against the threat of invasion. An airplane patrols the cloudy sky above. The sea on the right is painted a surprising shade of pink, a signature touch of Ravilious's unique, graphic style. Tragically, Ravilious died in a plane crash in 1942 while serving as an official war artist, making these coastal scenes some of his final, poignant works.
