Elvira Madigan
1943
Vibrant red curtains sweep across this 1943 Swedish movie poster, setting a dramatic stage for the tragic romance of Elvira Madigan. A dashing officer in a blue military uniform gazes intensely at his blonde partner, capturing the forbidden love between a circus tightrope walker and a Swedish lieutenant. The bold, Art Deco-style typography and lush colors promise a story of passion, based on the real-life couple who ran away together in 1889. Their doomed romance became so legendary it even inspired the nickname for Mozart's Piano Concerto No. 21!
